Spring has sprung and it looks like springs

Yesterday I posted a map showing that the thermal season may be arriving.

Here’s the evidence from yesterday’s flying:

This is the tracks of our gliders in the skies above Cambridgeshire today. What are the spring-like trails? That’s where the gliders have circled round and round to follow a thermal as it gets blown across the sky by the wind.

Vertically, it looks like this:

The first flight (on the left) didn’t find any thermals, so it was up and down in about 11 minutes.

But – two flights did find thermals – one of them managed to climb 1500 feet in a single thermal – resulting in about a 40-minute flight.

Not at all shabby for February!!
